Answer the following questions:-

Qus.1 Where did the lady find the bear cub? How did she bring it up ?

Ans. The lady found the bear cub in the forest. It was small and helpless. She bought it up on the bottle milk with the help of her cook.

Qus.2 The bear grew up but “he was a most amiable bear”. Give three examples to prove this.

Ans. He was a most amiable bear. He did not harm anybody. The children used to side on his back. They slept in his kennel between his paws. The three dogs teased him in every way, but he did not mind in it the least.

Qus.3 What did the bear eat ? There were two things he was not allowed to do. What were they ?

Ans. The bear ate bread, porridge, potato, cabbage, and turnip. He was not allowed to pluck apples off the trees. He learnt later that it was against the law. He was also not allowed to touch the beehives. He was punished for doing so by being put on the chain.

Qus.4 When was the bear tied up with a chain? Why ?

Ans. The bear was tied up with a chain at night. He was also tied up on Sundays when his mistress went out to meet her married sister. She did so because she did not think it was good for him to wander about in the forest with all its temptations.

Qus.5 What happened one Sunday when the lady was going to her sister’s house? What did the lady do? What was the bear’s reaction ?

Ans. When the lady had crossed half way through the forest , she suddenly saw that the bear was following her at full speed . In a minute the bear joined her . She was very much angry . She could not take him with her . She told him in her severest voice to go back . When he was not ready , she hit his nose with her umbrella . It seemed that he wanted to say something . He turned round and walked slowly , stopping now and then to look at his mistress .

Qus.6 Why was the bear looking sorry for himself in the evening? Why did the cook get angry with her mistress ?

Ans. The bear was looking sorry for himself in the evening because he had been chained all day and he could not do his usual activities. She saw her mistress scolding the bear. This made her angry with her mistress.
