Answer the following questions :-

Qus 1. (i) What was the Great Stone Face ?

Ans. The Great Stone Face was a work of nature. It was formed on the side of a mountain by huge rocks. It resembled a human face.

(ii) What did young Ernest wish when he gazed at it ?

Ans. When young Ernest gazed at the Great Stone Face, he wished that it could speak. It appeared so kindly that its voice must be pleasant.

Qus 2. What was the story attributed to the Stone Face ?

Ans. The story attributed to the Stone Face was that on some future day a child should be born near here. He would become the greatest and the noblest person of his time. In manhood his face would bear on exact resemblance to the Great Stone Face.

Qus 3. What gave the people of the valley the idea that the prophecy was about to come true for t first time?

Ans. A rumour spread throughout the valley that the great man, who looked like the Great Stone Face had appeared at last.

Qus 4. (i) Did Ernest see in the Gathergold the likeness of the Stone Face ?

Ans. No, Ernest  did not see any likeness of the Stone Face in Gathergold. To see Gathergold’s  face he turned away sadly and gazed up the valley.

(ii) Who did he confide in and how was he proved right ?

Ans. Ernest confided in the valley. He was sad because he found no resemblance in Gathergold to Stone Face. The Stone face told him that he should not fear. He assured him that the man with likeness to him would surely come.

Qus 5. (i) What made people believe General Blood-and-Thunder was their man ?

Ans. General Blood-and-Thunder rose to the highest position of his life from an ordinary soldier. Now he  had returned to his native valley. His childhood friends proclaimed that he had always looked like the Stone Face.  So the people took him as their man.

(ii) Ernest compared the man’s face with the Stone Face. What did he conclude ?

Ans. Ernest could not recognise any likeness in General Blood-and-Thunder’s face with that of the Stone Face. So he concluded that the general too was not the man whose face resembled the stone face.

1 . Imagine you are Ernest. Narrate the story that his mother told him.

Begin like this : My mother and I were sitting at the door of our cottage. We were looking at the Great Stone Face. I asked her if she had ever seen any one who looked like the Stone Face. Then she told me this story.

Begin like this : My name is Gathergold. I left the valley of the Great Stone Face fifty years ago. I am now going back home. Will the people of the valley welcome me ? Do they know that I am very rich ?

Ans. My name is Gathergold. I left the valley of the Great Stone Face fifty years ago. I am now gong back home. Will the people of the valley welcome me ? Do they know that I am very rich ? I reached my native valley in a carriage drawn by four horses. They were very much happy to welcome me in the valley. They were so enthusiastic that they proclaimed my resemblance to the Great Stone Face. They were thinking that their old prophecy had come true. I was overwhelmed to received such a warm welcome to my birth place on my return after so many years.
