Ans. Princess September was very sad over the death of her parrot. She burst into a flood of tears. She did not touch any food that day.

(ii) What was her mother’s reaction to it ?

Ans. The mother took this event indifferently. She thought it nonsense of Princess September to cry over the loss of bird.

(iii) What do the reactions indicate about the nature and temperament of each ?

Ans. The reaction indicates that the Princess is innocent. She loves birds. She is very sad at the loss of her pet parrot. She bursts into tears. But the mother considers it nonsense to cry over the loss of a bird. She does not have a loving nature.

Ans. Princess September was gloomy over the death of her parrot. She was lying in her bed. She was even hungry. She saw a little bird hop into her room. The bird began to sing a sweet song. This pulled the Princess out of her gloom.

Qus 6. How did the Maids of Honour come to know that the Princess and the bird had become intimate friends ?

Ans. The Maids of Honour saw that the Princess was very much happy and proud with the bird. They saw the bird eating rice out of the Princess hand and taking bath in her saucer. Thus, they came to know that they had become intimate friends.

Qus 7. The new bird was full of new songs but the old parrots always repeated themselves. What did they say ?

Ans. They always said ‘ God save the king’ and ‘ Pretty Polly.’

Ans. They said that they were going to buy a lovely green and yellow parrot for her.

(ii) Why, in your view, did they do it ?

Ans. They were jealous of the singing bird. They did not want that little bird to live with September. So they made this plan.

Qus 10. What did the sisters advise the Princess to do about her bird ?

Ans. The sisters advised the Princess to pop the little bird into the cage lest should run away from her for ever.

Qus 1. In the following sentence elaborate the parts given in bold. Under the circumstances it was a very unfortunate remark for the bird to make.

Ans. The  Princess was really worried about the bird. The fear in her mind was that the bird would leave her any time. When the bird made the remark that he was not to come back that night , the Princess decided to put him in the cage. So it was unfortunate for him to make this remark.

Qus 2. (i) What did Princess September do to ensure the safety of her pet ?

Ans. Princess September put her pet in the cage to ensure his safety.

(ii) How did the bird react to it ?

Ans. At first  the bird thought that the Princess might be joking. But when the truth revealed to him, he reacted sharply. He refused to take food and sing songs.

Qus 3. Why did the bird refuse to be taken out in her cage ?

Ans. The bird did not like to enjoy the beauty of the outside world imprisoned in a cage. He said that he will enjoy this beauty only when he would fly over the fields and the lakes. So he refused to be taken out in the cage.

Qus.4 (i) What persuaded Princess September to give the bird his freedom again ?

Ans. The Princess found her bird nearly dead in the cage. She took the bird out. She was very sorry. She began to weep. When the bird opened his eyes, he told the Princess if he was not set free he would die. This  persuaded Princess September to give the bird his freedom again.

(ii) How did the bird react to it ?

Ans. The bird was filled with joy. He promised the Princess that he would never leave her and would sing the most beautiful songs for her.

Qus 5. Princess September kept her window open day and night.

(i) How did it help the bird?

Ans. It helped the bird to fly in and out in the Princess room at any hour of the day.

(ii) How did it help the Princess herself ?

Ans. She got a lot of fresh air in her room through this open window. The fresh air made her grow up very beautiful. When she was old enough , she was married to a king.

Qus 6. The eight sisters kept their windows shut. How did it affect them ?

Ans. The eight sisters kept their windows shut.  No fresh air entered their rooms. So they grew up extremely ugly and disagreeable. They were married to the King’s Councillors.

Ans. Yes, the sisters are unkind and cruel. They did not like the little singing bird at all. They suggested Princess September to put that singing bird into the cage.
