Qus 1.  Why had Framton Nuttel come to the “rural retreat”?

Ans. Framton Nuttel had come to the “rural retreat” to undergo a nerve cure.

Qus 2. Why had his sister given him letters of introduction to people living there ?

Ans. His sister feared that he would bury himself down in the country. He will not speak to anybody. His nerves will be worse than ever. So she had given him letters of introduction to people living there.

Qus 3. What had happened in the Sappleton family as narrated by the niece ?

Ans. Three years ago to a day, Mrs. Sappleton’s  husband and her two young  brothers went off for their days shooting out through the window in the room. The three were engulfed in a treacherous piece of bog and died. Their bodies were never recovered. And the little brown spaniel was also lost with them.

Qus 1. What did Mrs Sappleton say about the open window ?

Ans. Mrs Sappleton said that her husband and brothers would be home directly from shooting through that window.

Qus 2. The horror on the girl’s face made Framton swing around in his seat. What did he see ?

Ans. He saw that the three figures were walking across the lawn towards the window. They all carried guns under their arms. One of them was additionally  burdened with a white coat hung over his shoulders. A tired spaniel kept close at their heels.

Qus 1. Why did Framton rush out wildly ?

Ans. Framton saw a dreadful sight through the window. He saw that three dead were coming back home, with their dog. The sight sent a chill in his body. So he rushed out widely.

Qus 2. What was the girl’s explanation for his lightning exit ?

Ans. The girl said  that in her view he rushed out because of the spaniel. He told her he had a lot of afraid of dogs. Now he had seen spaniel and it was enough for his lightning exit.

Ans. Yes, this is a mystery story. In this story we see the appearance of ghosts. The topics related to ghosts are full of mystery.

Qus 2. You are familiar with the ‘irony’ of the situation in a story.

Which situations in ‘The Open Window’ are good examples of the use of irony?

Ans. Framton has bad nerves. He goes to the country for his nerve cure. First he suffers when he comes to know that today is the day of the anniversary of Mrs. Sappleton’s tragedy. He receives even more shocks when he sees the figure of three dead walking across the lawn and coming to the window. This sight makes him rush out widely. This is the best example of irony in the story.

Qus 3. Which phrases/sentences in the text do you find difficult to understand? Select a few and guess the meaning of each. Rewrite a simple paraphrase of each.

Ans. The room seemed to suggest masculine habitation : It indicated that man lived there.

Tragedies seemed out of place : Tragedies are never expected at such places.

Engulfed in a treacherous piece of bog :  The marsh looked safe but they were caught in it and died.
