Do the following activities in groups:-

Qus.1  Describe a desert in your own way. Write a paragraph and read it aloud to your classmates.

Ans. A desert is any large and dry area mostly dominated by sand or rocks, that receives little rainfall, and have unfavourable conditions for crops and agriculture, and poses harsh living conditions for human-beings. The life in a desert is tough due to lack of rainfall, high temperature, and less vegetation. Nevertheless when you look closely, you will see that deserts are filled with life in their nooks and crannies. The flora and fauna of deserts have adapted to cope with harsh, dry conditions. Plants such as cacti and animals such as camels have evolved to store water in their succulent xylem and in their humps respectively. Plants and animals living in the desert need special adaptations to survive in the harsh environment.

Qus.2  Go to the library and collect information about the lifestyle of people in desert areas their food, clothes, work, social customs, etc. Share this information with the group.

Ans.  Many people in the deserts are nomads. Nomads rear cattle like goats, cows and camels. They keep moving from one place to another with their animals in search of food and water for them. Some of them are craftsmen and make a living by selling their goods. Some people grow crops like bajra, jowar, wheat and mustard seeds. There are also many industries (textiles, sugar, cement, fertilisers, etc.) and mines (lead, zinc, iron-ore, etc.) that provide people of this region with means of livelihood. Handicrafts and jewellery made in Rajasthan are sold in many parts of India and the world. The women of Rajasthan wear colourful ghaghra-cholis with an odhni or chunni. The men wear dhoti-kurta with turbans to protect themselves from the harsh sun.
