Qus.1 With your partner try to guess the meaning of the underlined phrases.

  1. And somehow we fell out.
  2. The afternoon turned black.

Ans.

  1. Started fighting
  2. Turned into night.

Qus.2 Read these lines from the poem:

  1. One thing led to another
  2. The start of it was slight
  3. The end of it was strong
  4. The afternoon turned black
  5. Thumped me on the back

Discuss with your partner what these lines mean.

Ans.

  1. It means that a small argument led to another argument.
  2. When the argument started, started fighting.
  3. The end of the argument was strong as it had turned into a big fight.
  4. Their fighting continued as afternoon turned into night.
  5. It means that the poet’s brother hit her (patted her) lightly on her back in order to talk to her and put an end to the fighting.

Qus 3- Describe a recent quarrel that you have had with your brother, sister or friend. How did it start? What did you quarrel about? How did it end?
