Qus 1. Why is the Giant called selfish ?

Ans. The Giant is called selfish because he did not let the children play in his garden. He drove them out. He did not want anybody to play in his garden except himself.

Qus 2. On one occasion the children said: “How happy we are here!” Later they said: “How happy we were there!”  What are they referring to in both the cases ?

Ans. When the Giant was not present in the garden, the children enjoyed playing in it. So they said ,” How happy we are here!” When the Giant came back, he built a high wall around the garden. Now the children could not play in it. So they said,” How happy we were there!”

Qus 3. (i) When spring came, it was still winter in the garden. What does winter stand for or indicate here ?

Ans. In this story  winter indicates here that the Giant’s garden seemed lifeless. There were no blossoms and fruit on the trees. Birds did not sing there. There was no joy.

(ii) Winter has been presented like a story with its own characters and their activities. Describe the story in your own words.

Ans. When the Giant prevented the children to play in his garden, the winter had made a permanent stay in the garden. There were no flowers, no fruit and no birds in the garden. It was the Snow, the Frost, the North Wind and the Hail that were the main actors in the garden.

Qus 4. Was the Giant happy or sad over the state of the garden ?

Ans. The Giant was sad over the state of his garden. He was eagerly waiting for the spring but it did not come.

Qus 5. What effect did the linnet’s song have over Hail and the North Wind ?

Ans. Hearing the linnet’s song in the garden , the Hail stopped dancing over his head , and the North Wind stopped roaring.

Comprehension Check:-

Qus.1 (i) The Giant saw a most wonderful sight. What did he see ?

Ans. He saw that the children had crept in through a little hole in the wall. They were sitting in the branches of the trees. The trees were glad to have the children , the blossoms and the birds again.

(ii) What did he realise on seeing it ?

Ans. Seeing such a delightful sight of his garden he was very happy. His heart became soft. He cursed himself for being selfish.

Qus 2. Why was it still winter in one corner of the garden ?

Ans. In one corner of the garden, there was a tree all covered with frost and snow. A little boy was standing in front of it, but could not climb the tree. He was wandering around it crying bitterly.

Qus 3. Describe the first meeting of the little boy and the Giant.

Ans. The first meeting of the little boy and the Giant was that the Giant took the little boy gently in his hands and put him up into the tree. The little boy stretched out his two arms and flung them round the Giant’s neck and kissed him.

Qus 4. Describe their second meeting after a long interval.

Ans. The second meeting between the little boy and the Giant took place after a long interval of many years. The Giant saw the little boy standing under a tree in his garden. The boy had prints of two nails on his hands and two on his feet. The boy told the Giant those were the wounds of love. The boy told him that he had come to take him to his garden and the name of his garden is paradise.

Qus 5. The Giant lay dead, all covered with white blossoms. What does this sentence indicate about the once selfish Giant ?

Ans. This sentence indicates that the Giant’s selfishness was forgiven by God. He had been blessed by God to get a place in ‘Paradise’.

Qus 1. The little child’s hands and feet had marks of nails. Who does the child remind you of ? Give a reason for your answer.

Ans. The child reminds us of Jesus Christ. When Jesus was hanged to death, nails were fixed by the jews on his palms and feet against a wall. Jesus Christ had come to the Giant in the guise of the little boy.

Qus 2. Is  there something like this garden near where you live ? Would you like one (without the Giant perhaps) and why ? What would you do to keep it in good shape ?

Ans. Yes, there is a beautiful garden near my house. I spend most of my time playing in this garden. I don’t tolerate the presence of any Giant in the garden. To keep the garden in good shape, I would water the plants and would never pluck flowers.
